McNamee Breaks His Silence, Rips Rocket in Hall Bid - SEE VIDEO
Inside Sports
Wednesday, 10 December 2008
By Mike Marzano
The world listened intently when Brian McNamee, the embattled ex-trainer of seven-time Cy Young Award winner Roger Clemens, spoke under oath on February 13 before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee hearing on drug use in baseball.

But aside from his testimony on Capitol Hill that day, McNamee has
remained mostly silent since.  Now, in a videotape obtained by SportsImproper.com, McNamee talks about Clemens and the past.
See video - Part 1 of 2

What are the 300-game winner’s chances of someday being inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame?

None. Says McNamee.

“He’s done. He’s not going to the Hall of Fame,” McNamee says. “There’s no chance. Too much damage. Too much trust was broken. Between the people that gave him his career, and the people that wrote about his career, and the people that supported his career.

“You know, it takes a lifetime to build trust. All it takes is one monumental moment to break that trust and you’re done. And that’s what happened. It not only happened, but it happened at monumental lengths. So he’s not deserving of the Hall of Fame.”

On the video, McNamee also clarifies perceptions about his relationship with Clemens, saying the media has misled people and that it was a business relationship.

“I cared for his family, he cared for mine to a degree,” McNamee says. “We had a general concern for our well-beings. (But) we didn’t really run in the same paths, which means outside of work.”

McNamee acknowledges that having Clemens as a client helped his own career.

I cared for his body,” McNamee says. “It was good for me in a business sense to train him and to help my outside interests. But as far as a friendship, I mean obviously if there was one I really don’t think there’s going to be one again or a relationship again after what transpired.”

McNamee reveals he rarely left the house after the Mitchell Report came out on Dec. 13, 2007. Now, nearly one year later, he is rebuilding his life and career.

“I started to go out and the support was so great,” he says. “Then I got back into training and that’s been going well. The celebrity thing? I don’t want it, I really don’t. But I realize that if there’s any good that can come out of this, then I can use maybe the notoriety to do some good and that’s what I’m trying to do.”

Does Clemens owe him an apology?

“He doesn’t owe me anything,” McNamee says. “Apology? There’s no need. He did was he thought was right, I did what I had to do. End of story.”

McNamee says he and Clemens have not spoken since their highly publicized phone conversation from January 4, 2008, the one that Clemens recorded unbeknownst to McNamee and then played at a news conference three days later.

He says if they do speak again, “it wouldn’t be my dime.”

Still, if Clemens called him, McNamee didn’t completely shut the door on talking to the Rocket again.

“He’s going to need a job,” McNamee says with a straight face. “So I might take that call. I might hire him.”

2008-12-1120:32:50 McNamee stood by his friend in the friend's time of need — Clemens screwed his friend in HIS time of need.

That's all you have to know about them.

2008-12-1111:03:39 I'm not defending him at all. Trust me on that one. I'm just curious. What would you do? They were both already caught. He could have injected him 100 times, who knows? He said just a few. Does it occur to anyone that maybe Mcnamee was protecting Clemens to a degree?
